Accelerated Reader
AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his own level and reads it at his own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.
Homework
Homework assignments are given for the following reasons:
¨ to teach students responsibility
¨ to allow students to work independently
¨ to reinforce skills learned at school
Homework is usually given Monday through Thursday nights. If a student has been absent or has long-range assignments, he/she will be expected to do school work on the weekend.
Homework or schoolwork missed through absence is to be made up within a period designated by the teacher (usually two days times the number of days absent). It is the responsibility of the student to approach the teacher to request this make-up work.
